About the TCC Police Department

Who We Are

The Tallahassee State College Police Department is comprised of sworn and non-sworn law enforcement officers, public safety communications officers, emergency management personnel, and administrative staff. TSC police officers have jurisdiction on property the college owns, leases, or otherwise controls, and streets that run through or adjacent to college property. In order to accomplish its mission of ensuring a safe and secure campus, all TSCPD members receive continuous training. Safety training such as Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) to students, faculty, and staff are also provided by members.

TSCPD provides a full range of police services. These include investigating all crimes committed in its jurisdiction, making arrests, providing safety services programs, enforcing traffic laws, and providing assistance to everyone on campus. TSCPD maintains close working relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to implement and coordinate law enforcement operations, as needed.

TSCPD members understand the overall academic mission of Tallahassee State College and strive to play a vital role in enhancing that mission. Members have concern for the community’s well-being, desire to provide service and assistance whenever possible, and commitment to supporting the academic environment. These factor into TSCPD’s daily operations and procedures.

Accreditation

In 2013, TSCPD became the first state college police department in Florida to be accredited by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA). TSCPD received reaccreditation from CFA in 2016. Accreditation is a prestigious award that recognizes TSCPD’s commitment to contemporary policing standards.

In order to maintain accreditation, TSCPD must comply with approximately 250 standards on various topics. These include Use of Force, Arrest Procedures, Community Relations, Professional Ethics, and Police Management Practices.  An assessment is conducted by CFA at 3 year intervals to ensure that member agencies remain in compliance with these rigid professional standards.

Bias Based Profiling

Bias based profiling or racial profiling in traffic contacts, field contacts, and in asset seizure and forfeiture efforts is strictly prohibited. Sworn officers shall actively enforce state and federal laws and applicable campus policies and procedures in a responsible and professional manner. Procedures will be executed without regard to race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation or gender.

Officers may take into account the reported race or ethnicity of a specific suspect or suspects based upon relevant, reliable information that links a person or persons of a specific race or ethnicity to a particular unlawful incident. Race and ethnicity may never be used as the sole basis for probable cause or reasonable suspicion.
