Need a little help getting through a tough class? The Learning Commons gives you free access to tutors, Success Coaches, study resources, and academic support designed to help you stay on track. Get help understanding a tough concept, prepare for your next exam, improve your writing or study skills, or build a plan for managing your time. Whether you’re looking to catch up, keep up, or get ahead, the Learning Commons is here to help you succeed. Check out all of our resources below.

TUTORING

Our tutors offer free, personalized one-on-one support and resources in a safe, welcoming, and nonjudgmental environment. 

All tutors are trained and certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and participate in ongoing professional development. Learning Commons Specialists are professional tutors who hold bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees. All conferences, except reading conferences, last up to 30 minutes. 

Who should have a tutoring conference? Everyone. Tutoring helps you strengthen academic skills, deepen course understanding, build confidence, develop effective study habits, and achieve your educational goals.

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION

Need a little extra support in College Algebra, English Composition, Anatomy and Physiology, or Financial Accounting? Supplemental Instruction (SI) gives you another way to review course material, strengthen your study skills, and learn alongside other students. Sessions are free, and attending could make you eligible for bookstore vouchers or other course incentives.

The SI program helps students succeed through collaborative learning activities that reinforce course content and effective study strategies. SI is currently embedded in gateway courses such as MAC1105C and ENC1101C, and is available on a voluntary basis for MAC1105, ENC1101, BSC2085, BSC2085L, and ACG2021.

Voluntary SI sessions are offered weekly in the Learning Commons and are open to all students enrolled in those courses. Students who attend voluntary SI sessions can earn a $25 TSC Bookstore voucher, and some instructors offer additional course incentives for participation.

SUCCESS COACHING

Our Success Coaches, located on the second floor of the Library in Suite 217, are here to help you with college success skills, orient you to the campus environment, and help you achieve your goals. The Success Coach Suite provides a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment.

Coaches are available for one-on-one coaching sessions to assist with developing time management skills, motivation and goal setting, test anxiety, organization, and more! On-campus and virtual success coaching is available to all students.

HONORLOCK TESTING ROOM

The Honorlock Testing Room, located on the first floor of the Learning Commons in Room LC 164, provides you with a quiet, distraction-reduced environment for completing Honorlock-proctored exams. The room features individual computer stations and is available on a walk-in, first-come, first-served basis.

Check in with the Learning Commons front desk and bring a valid photo ID, such as a driver's license or state-issued identification card.

Hours of Operation:

Monday through Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (latest entry at 6:30 p.m.)
Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (latest entry at 4 p.m.)

Please arrive at least 1 to 2 hours before closing to allow sufficient time to complete your exam.

ALGEBRA CORNER

Located on the east side of the first floor of the Learning Commons, the Algebra Corner is a welcoming study space where you can work independently or collaborate with classmates on homework, assignments, and course material. While working in the Algebra Corner, you may request assistance from a certified math tutor.

To support independent learning and problem-solving skills, tutoring interactions are limited to five (5) minutes per request. You are welcome to seek assistance during your visit as often as needed. If you are enrolled in an algebra course, we encourage you to make the Algebra Corner part of your regular study routine.

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY ROOM

The Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) Room, located on the second floor of the Learning Commons in Room LC 256, is a premier, walk-in study suite tailored for healthcare and science students. Designed specifically to reinforce coursework for BSC 2085, BSC 2086, and the associated labs, this specialized facility gives you access to the exact anatomical models used in your lab courses, relevant handouts, and Practice Practicals.

The A&P Room also features 15-minute Practice Practicals, allowing you to quiz yourself on anatomical structures and concepts in a format similar to your lab practical exams. You can seek assistance from Learning Commons tutors and specialists to strengthen your understanding and build confidence before testing.

This space allows you to study independently or work in small groups.

PUBLIC SPEAKING STUDIO

Located on the second floor of the Learning Commons in Room LC 260C, the Public Speaking Studio blends technology and personalized human expertise to support you in Public Speaking (SPC2608) and with presentations in any TSC course. Using AI-powered tools alongside LC tutor feedback, you can practice and refine your speaking skills without the pressure of a grade. You can also reserve the room and equipment to practice and record presentations.

We can assist with every stage of the speech development process, from brainstorming and organization to delivery and presentation techniques. Support is available both in-person and virtually; however, the Public Speaking Studio and its AI-powered tools are available only in-person.

WORKSHOPS

The Learning Commons offers a variety of workshops designed to support you both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout the semester, you can participate in a variety of workshops, including Civic Literacy, HESI prep, course-specific test reviews for core math, science, and accounting courses, effective learning strategies, and more.

Additional workshops are developed in response to student needs and may address academic success, learning technologies, college readiness, and other relevant topics. These interactive sessions provide you with valuable resources, practical skills, and opportunities to strengthen your academic confidence and performance.

AFTER HOURS TUTORING

Brainfuse is a free online tutoring service available through the navigation panel in any TSC Canvas course, connecting you with qualified tutors for live assistance, homework help, test preparation, and study support across a variety of subjects.

You can also submit papers for writing feedback and receive guidance on grammar, organization, and citation styles. Available from home, campus, or anywhere with internet access, Brainfuse offers flexible academic support when you can't get to the Learning Commons.
